I have a friend that has been fixing up her house lately and I keep promising to come help. Unfortunately, with my schedule, that promise has been pretty hard to fulfill. I finally took a day to go over there and help with fixing up a floor in one of her bedrooms. It looks like the people before her didn’t care for the wood underneath nor did they care to put down a drop cloth when painting the room. So once she pulled up the carpet she found the floor was covered in paint splatters and stains from spill damage.
Since renting a floor sander was going to be more of a pain then it was worth we decided to attack it with a couple hand sanders. One random orbit sander and one air sander connected to a 150 PSI 20 gallon compressor. It was still a little slow going but it didn’t take us all that long to complete the sanding. The wood was fairly smooth already so there wasn’t much of a need for the low girt paper except in a couple areas.
Once the sanding was all done we ran up to Lowes and grabbed a can of stain that was on sale. This stain really brought out the grain and character in the wood. This isn’t the “ideal” hard wood that you would want to see in a home. In fact, there were parts of the floor that had stamps on the wood with things like “This Crate Contains…” This really added a lot of character to the floor and we even left one of the stamps in one spot because it just looked really cool. The overall project took most of the day and she still needs to go over it with some finish such as polyurethane to protect the wood and stain. However, taking one day to make a room look that good was WELL worth it!
